Elon Musk to unveil 'fully sustainable energy future for Earth' at Tesla Investor Day
Concerned about the future of energy on Earth? Worry not, it's all been solved! On Wednesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he plans to present the "path to a fully sustainable energy future for Earth" at Tesla's next Investor Day, scheduled for March 1. It will be the third instance of Musk's "Master Plan," a long-term strategy for Tesla that Musk first started posting in 2006. In the first part of the Master Plan, Musk described his plan for scaling Tesla, starting with the production of a high performance electric car (that was the original Tesla Roadster), then using the profits to scale into production of a more affordable, family sedan (that was the Tesla Model S), and then use the profits to build an even more affordable electric car (those were the Tesla Model 3 and the Tesla Model Y), all the while providing zero emission, electric power generation options via photovoltaics company Solarcity that was later acquired by Tesla. In the second instance of the Master Plan, revealed in 2016, Musk said the company planned to expand the electric vehicle product line further, create solar roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storage, and develop self-driving capability "that is 10x safer than manual." It's worth pausing here to point out that, while the first part of the Master Plan worked more or less as Musk envisioned, the second part is lagging severely. Tesla is selling solar roofs, but not nearly enough to make a big dent in the U.S. energy production landscape, and Tesla cars do have some self-driving capabilities, but they're still far from being able to safely drive you around on their own. The last part of Musk's second Master Plan, which is to enable Tesla cars to earn money for their owners by working as robotic taxis, hinges on self-driving and regulatory approval, and it currently appears to be years away, at best. Musk has been tweeting about Master Plan Part 3 for a year, but hasn't revealed too many details yet. But if we're talking about a "fully sustainable energy future for Earth," it has to be something big and global, right? The event, which will be held at Tesla's Giga Texas factory near Austin, Texas, was announced in January. It will be live streamed, though some of Tesla's investors will also attend in person. "Our investors will be able to see our most advanced production line as well as discuss long term expansion plans, generation 3 platform, capital allocation and other subjects with our leadership team," the company said in an announcement.
